Gay Marriage and Adoption - 732 Words

Society and social institutions are made up of intertwined parts and each part alone cannot sustain society or the social system by themselves. Durkheim (functionalist) believes that as a society we need deviance to promote social change and social unity, without deviance we cannot define and clarify our moral boundaries. We need gay marriage to deviate society and brake the traditional marriage/relationship and encourage equality for all. The idea of gay marriage conflicts with their idea of marriage; that somehow when two people of the opposite sex are in love it is less official. Marx (conflict theorist) states that the dominant ideology in our country is that marriage is the union of a man and a woman, therefore, two men or two women can not be married. This article is about engaging the homosexual community in the process of adopting each spouses children in the event that one of them dies. In this article two women are fighting the gay marriage law in michigan in order to have the rights to parental interest of their children. They are fighting that the law prevents them from co-adopting their three children. They argue that no other group in society has their rights to adopt their significant others children with held from them. That society should not be able to establish which parental unit homosexual or heterosexual is more qualified to raise children.
